Which AI image generator is right for you?
AI image generators have become a staple in the design world. But which tool is best for which use case? I’ve compared the four most popular options.
1. Midjourney
Midjourney currently delivers the most aesthetically impressive results. Whether photorealistic scenes or stylized illustrations, the image quality is remarkable. It’s particularly well suited for designers, creatives and marketing teams who need high-quality visuals for campaigns, moodboards or social media.
The downside: Midjourney runs through Discord, which makes getting started a bit awkward. But in terms of output quality, few tools come close.
2. DALL-E
OpenAI’s image generator turns detailed text descriptions into diverse visuals. DALL-E’s strength lies in its versatility, from surrealist scenes and technical drawings to a wide range of artistic styles.
DALL-E is available directly through ChatGPT, making it very accessible. Great when you need a quick image without setting up a separate account.
3. Firefly
Adobe’s answer to the AI boom. Firefly generates images quickly and easily, without requiring deep prompt engineering skills. The biggest advantage: direct integration with Photoshop, Illustrator and the entire Adobe ecosystem.
For teams already working with Adobe tools, Firefly is a natural next step.
4. Canva Create (Magic Studio)
Canva has built AI features directly into its design platform. This makes it especially attractive for teams that want to generate images and immediately use them in their designs, without switching between tools.
Image quality doesn’t quite match Midjourney, but for social media graphics, presentations and quick drafts, it’s more than sufficient.
Which tool for which purpose?
Maximum image quality: Midjourney. Quick and versatile: DALL-E. Adobe integration: Firefly. Team workflows and design: Canva Create.
